What is FinChat?
FinChat turns any screen into a voice-powered financial planning terminal. Users speak scenarios in plain English — “What if my balance was $800,000?” — and FinChat runs the projection, generates a comparison chart, and displays it in seconds. It handles retirement projections, risk profiling, insurance quoting, super fund comparison, meeting transcription, and compliance documentation. FinChat was a finalist in AI Innovator, Wealth Management at the Australian AI Awards 2024.
Who uses FinChat — advisers or super funds?
Both. FinChat for advisers lets financial planners run interactive client meetings using voice — the adviser controls the session and produces a Statement of Advice on the spot. FinChat for super funds lets fund members engage with their super by voice at home, delivering general and intra-fund advice at scale without triggering personal advice obligations. What about individuals?
For consumers who want to manage their own financial planning, we built SMFP (Self-Managed Financial Planning) — a separate site with 40+ calculators, 42 info-grams, video guides, a glossary, and its own voice-powered digital assistant. SMFP costs $99 per year and was a finalist in Innovator of the Year 2025. It doesn’t recommend products or produce a Statement of Advice — it’s purely educational and self-service.
What technology does FinChat use?
Amazon Alexa for voice, AWS Lambda for compute, DynamoDB for data, QuickChart for chart generation, APL for screen display on Echo Show and Fire TV devices, AWS Transcribe and Claude (Anthropic’s AI) for meeting transcription and summarisation, and the docx library for Word document generation. The entire platform runs on serverless cloud infrastructure — no desktop software, no on-premise servers.
Who is Steve Manning?
Steve Manning is a Sydney-based founder with 30+ years in financial services technology. He built both FinChat (voice-powered tools for financial advisers and super funds, finalist in AI Innovator 2024) and SMFP (40+ calculators and a voice assistant for consumers, finalist in Innovator of the Year 2025). He designs, builds, and maintains the entire stack himself.
